International Seminar in Geneva Warns of the Impact of Houthi Attacks on Regional Security and Global Trade

Geneva, Switzerland – March 20, 2025

The Southern Independent Group held an international seminar today at the Swiss Press Club in Geneva, under the title “Houthi Attacks on International Shipping Routes and Their Impact on Undermining Peace and Stability in the Region.” The event brought together security and economic experts, as well as human rights activists, to discuss the consequences of the Houthi escalation in the Red Sea and its effects on global trade and the humanitarian situation in Yemen.

Yemeni journalist Bassem Al-Janani discussed in his speech the security dimensions of the Houthi escalation, highlighting the role of Iranian intervention in supporting the Houthis and its impact on regional stability. He stressed that the ongoing attacks against commercial and military vessels threaten freedom of navigation and affect global trade.

For his part, Anis Abdullah, a member of the Southern Independent Group, reviewed the humanitarian impact of these attacks, noting that the obstruction of relief ships has worsened the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Prices of essential goods have increased by 40%, and the suffering of the population has deepened due to shortages of food and fuel.

Meanwhile, human rights activist Abdulrahman Farhan focused on the economic repercussions, explaining that the number of ships passing through the Red Sea has decreased by 60% since November 2023, leading to major financial losses for the Suez Canal and regional ports, in addition to a significant rise in global transportation and insurance costs.

Participants in the seminar agreed that the current international response remains insufficient to deter the Houthis. They called for stronger measures to protect international navigation, prevent arms smuggling, and alleviate Yemen’s humanitarian crisis.

The seminar concluded by emphasizing the need for coordinated international efforts to confront Houthi threats, warning that the continuation of these attacks will further destabilize the region and negatively affect global economic stability and regional peace.

ندوة دولية في جنيف تحذر من تداعيات هجمات الحوثيين على الأمن الإقليمي والتجارة الدولية

عقدت المجموعة الجنوبية المستقلة اليوم ندوة دولية في نادي الصحافة السويسري في مدينة جنيف تحت عنوان "هجمات الحوثيين على طرق الشحن الدولية وأثرها على تقويض السلام والاستقرار في المنطقة"، بمشاركة خبراء أمنيين واقتصاديين وناشطين حقوقيين، لمناقشة تداعيات التصعيد الحوثي في البحر الأحمر وتأثيراته على التجارة العالمية والوضع الإنساني في اليمن.

حيث ناقش الصحفي اليمني بسيم الجناني في كلمته الأبعاد الأمنية للتصعيد الحوثي، مسلطًا الضوء على دور التدخل الإيراني في دعم الحوثيين وتأثير ذلك على الاستقرار الإقليمي. وأكد أن استمرار الهجمات ضد السفن التجارية والعسكرية يهدد حرية الملاحة الدولية ويؤثر على التجارة العالمية.

من جانبه، استعرض أنيس عبد الله، عضو المجموعة ، التأثير الإنساني لهذه الهجمات، مشيرًا إلى أن عرقلة السفن الإغاثية أدت إلى تفاقم الأزمة الإنسانية في اليمن، حيث ارتفعت أسعار السلع الأساسية بنسبة 40%، وتزايدت معاناة السكان بسبب نقص الغذاء والوقود.

أما الناشط الحقوقي عبد الرحمن فرحان، فقد ركز على الأثر الاقتصادي، موضحًا أن عدد السفن المارة عبر البحر الأحمر انخفض بنسبة 60% منذ نوفمبر 2023 ، مما تسبب في خسائر اقتصادية كبيرة لقناة السويس والموانئ الإقليمية، إضافة إلى ارتفاع تكاليف النقل والتأمين على المستوى العالمي.

أكد المشاركون في الندوة أن الاستجابة الدولية الحالية غير كافية لردع الحوثيين، مطالبين باتخاذ إجراءات أكثر صرامة لحماية الملاحة الدولية، ومنع تهريب الأسلحة، وتخفيف الأزمة الإنسانية في اليمن.

واختُتمت الندوة بالتشديد على ضرورة تنسيق الجهود الدولية لمواجهة التهديدات الحوثية، مع التحذير من أن استمرار الهجمات سيؤدي إلى مزيد من الاضطرابات في المنطقة، مما يؤثر سلبًا على الاقتصاد العالمي والاستقرار الإقليمي.
