The Red Sea Crisis: Security, Economy, and Humanitarian Challenges

Geneva, Switzerland – March 26, 2025

The Independent Southern Group, in cooperation with the APLCI Association, organized an international seminar on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, titled “The Situation in the Red Sea: Security, Economic, and Humanitarian Challenges.” The event brought together security and economic experts as well as human rights activists to discuss the repercussions of the conflict in the Red Sea and its impact on global trade and the humanitarian situation in Yemen. The seminar was attended by representatives of several UN member states and was moderated by Nasser Al-Eisaei, politician and human rights defender, representing both the APLCI Association and the Independent Southern Group.

Economic, Security, and Humanitarian Impacts

Dr. Abdeljalil Shaif, former director of the Free Organization in Aden, highlighted the economic consequences, explaining that the number of ships passing through the Red Sea has dropped by 60% since November 2023, leading to significant losses for the Suez Canal and regional ports, as well as a global rise in transport and insurance costs.

For his part, Ousan Bin Sada, media and human rights activist, addressed the security dimensions of the Houthi escalation, pointing to Iran’s role in supporting the Houthis and its effect on regional stability. He emphasized that the continued attacks on commercial and military vessels pose a serious threat to international navigation and global trade.

Meanwhile, Osama Thabet, human rights activist and member of the Independent Southern Group, discussed the humanitarian impact of the conflict, stressing that the obstruction of relief ships has worsened Yemen’s humanitarian crisis. He noted that the prices of essential goods have risen by 40%, while shortages of food and fuel have deepened the suffering of the population.

Calls for Firm International Action

Participants in the seminar agreed that the current international response is insufficient to deter the Houthis. They called for stronger measures to protect international navigation, prevent arms smuggling, and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

The seminar concluded by emphasizing the importance of coordinated international efforts to confront the Houthi threats, warning that the continuation of such attacks would lead to broader regional instability, negatively affecting the global economy and regional security.

نظّمت المجموعة الجنوبية المستقلة بالتعاون مع جمعية APLCI يوم الأربعاء 26 مارس 2025، ندوة دولية في مجلس الأمم المتحدة لحقوق الإنسان بمدينة جنيف تحت عنوان "الوضع في البحر الأحمر: تحديات الأمن والاقتصاد والعمليات الإنسانية"، بمشاركة خبراء أمنيين واقتصاديين وناشطين حقوقيين. ناقشت الندوة تداعيات الصراع في البحر الأحمر، وتأثيراته على التجارة العالمية والوضع الإنساني في اليمن، بحضور عدد من ممثلي بعثات الدول الأعضاء في الأمم المتحدة، وأدارها نصر العيسائي، السياسي والمدافع عن حقوق الإنسان، ممثلًا عن جمعية APLCI و المجموعة الجنوبية المستقلة.

تأثيرات اقتصادية وأمنية وإنسانية

سلّط الدكتور عبدالجليل شائف، المدير السابق للمنظمة الحرة في عدن، الضوء على التداعيات الاقتصادية، موضحًا أن عدد السفن المارة عبر البحر الأحمر انخفض بنسبة 60% منذ نوفمبر 2023، ما أدى إلى خسائر كبيرة لقناة السويس والموانئ الإقليمية، بالإضافة إلى ارتفاع تكاليف النقل والتأمين عالميًا.

من جانبه، تناول الناشط الإعلامي والحقوقي أوسان بن سدة الأبعاد الأمنية للتصعيد الحوثي، مشيرًا إلى دور إيران في دعم الحوثيين وتأثير ذلك على استقرار المنطقة. وأكد أن استمرار الهجمات على السفن التجارية والعسكرية يشكل تهديدًا خطيرًا لحرية الملاحة الدولية والتجارة العالمية.

أما الناشط الحقوقي أسامة ثابت، عضو المجموعة الجنوبية المستقلة، فتطرق إلى التأثير الإنساني للصراع، مشددًا على أن عرقلة وصول السفن الإغاثية فاقمت الأزمة الإنسانية في اليمن، حيث ارتفعت أسعار السلع الأساسية بنسبة 40%، وزادت معاناة السكان بسبب نقص الغذاء والوقود.

دعوات لاتخاذ إجراءات دولية حازمة

أكد المشاركون في الندوة أن الاستجابة الدولية الحالية غير كافية لردع الحوثيين، مطالبين باتخاذ إجراءات أكثر صرامة لحماية الملاحة الدولية، ومنع تهريب الأسلحة، والتخفيف من الأزمة الإنسانية في اليمن.

واختُتمت الندوة بالتشديد على أهمية تنسيق الجهود الدولية لمواجهة التهديدات الحوثية ، محذّرين من أن استمرار الهجمات سيؤدي إلى اضطرابات أوسع في المنطقة، تنعكس سلبًا على الاقتصاد العالمي والاستقرار الإقليمي.
